The Princess Diaries (920L)
Cabot, M. (2008). The Princess Diaries. New York, NY: HarperTeen.
Meg Cabot’s novel The Princess Diaries is one of her most well known novels. They even turned it into a film series. It is about a girl who lived in New York City with her mom, but finds out at the age of fourteen, that her father is actually the prince of Genovia. She is now technically the heir to the throne of Genovia. She learns to become a princess from her grandmother. Her princess lessons are difficult for her due to her awkwardness and her clumsiness. But of course, she works through her issues and decides to stick with her training and to continue on with her family legacy of royalty.
This novel has been one of my favorite Young Adult novels for years. I have actually read the whole series and every other novel Meg Cabot has ever written. I just connected with Mia’s character due to her being awkward and clumsy and sometimes just plain weird, especially me in high school.
There are many themes found in The Princess Diaries. There are themes of beauty, coming of age, courage, family, friendship, heritage, love, loyalty, obligation, secrecy, and the overlooked.
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (1070L)
Grahame-Smith, S. (2009). Pride And Prejudice And Zombies. New York, NY: Quirk Books.
Seth Grahame-Smith’s Pride and Prejudice parody is hilarious. The idea that Elizabeth Bennet would be off fighting zombies with her sisters during dances is so intriguing. If you love Pride and Prejudice, you will love this version. Elizabeth Bennet falls in love with Mr. Darcy just as Austen’s classic novel. The detail of the zombies and the weaponry that the Bennet’s have learned is awesome.
This novel is so closely related to Austen’s classic novel, which has been one of my favorite novels since I was in middle school.
There are many themes found in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. There are themes of beauty, family, friendship, fear, fear of failure, heroes, justice, loyalty, love, obligation, and quest for knowledge, safety, survival, and war.
